12 Aug Investing in your worth with Yvonne Chaka Chaka
When I wake up in the morning and I look at myself I say “54 years old and I look sexy.” – Yvonne Chaka Chaka
There is something so special about seeing the Princess of Africa, multiple award-winning songwriter, actress, entrepreneur, humanitarian and teacher Yvonne Chaka Chaka telling the story at AMPD Studios of how much she believes in herself and her worth. There is a fire in her that shines so bright, and it can shine in you too.
One of the major points that Mam Yvonne talks about, is to know your worth. It’s not up to the manager or promotor to negotiate your fee down to their level. You need to know exactly what you bring to the table and what monetary value that has to you.
It sounds difficult to tell someone that this is your offer and they can “take it or leave it,” but it’s essential that you know your value in order to demand what you deserve. If you truly bring that value, then they will pay. If you do not and you ask above your value, then there is every chance that you will lose out on gigs.
Yvonne is realistic and speaks of the relationship that she has with her finances. She is, in her own words, stingy and that if you do not work hard, then you will fail, and if you fail, then you don’t get paid. She does not simply hand out money, even to her own kids. She believes that you have to work hard in order to get what you want. This comes back to an important point that all our legends refer to. You have to work hard, and for artists, it’s not as simple as going to the office and slamming the keyboard. For you it’s a self-propelled work ethic. You are going to need to do it for yourself, push yourself, work on that album, that single, that artwork. If you invest in your worth, you’ll invest in your wealth!
