31 Aug There is only one you with Yvonne Chaka-Chaka & Zolani Mahola
The importance of uniqueness cannot be underestimated, when it comes down to it, who you are is the seed of your success because there is only one you.
Your voice is your voice, and there is no one else who can do it, it’s something that you can cling to when you are feeling uncertain or nervous, remember your unique and special voice and story. However, knowing what your unique offering is, is harder to do than you might think. Knowing herself is what made former lead singer of Freshly Ground, and now world renowned solo Artist Zolani Mahola last so long in the industry. She has been in the music for almost 20 years now, and even at her young age it has cemented her place in the legacy of South African music.
Mam Yvonne Chaka Chaka tells a similar tale of knowing herself and her unique offering meaning she has been in the industry for over 35 years. She sees the same uniqueness in many of the latest great artists in South Africa, and she puts down their success to them not wanting to change, not wanting to be someone else. People like Kwesta, HHP [RIP], Sjava, Sho Madjozi or the Motswako rappers have built careers out of their unique identities, they are themselves they don’t want to be anything but themselves. More artists who impress The Princess of Africa are the Nigerians as well as the French speaking North African nations who she says fully embrace their identity, they don’t want to “speak ‘proper english’, they sing the way they sing and that’s why they make money”
So as you write your lyrics, hunt for and discover your uniqueness. What makes you the most unique person on that stage, and how are you going to express yourself?
